Degrees and awards: Defended his Ph.D. thesis at Aalborg University in 1998 and his doctoral thesis (D.M.Sc) at Aarhus University in 1999.

Scientific work: He has authored 367 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and reviews and is a widely recognised expert in visceral pain, gastroenterology, pharmacology and brain-gut interactions. As such he is a frequent speaker and chairman at international congresses. He has been organizer of many international meetings. Currently he is member of the scientific board of European Society of Neurogastroenterology and European Federation of IASP Chapters. Since 2012 he has been the President of Scandinavian Association for Neurogastroenterology and Motility. As Principal Investigator his primary research interests are gastrointestinal pain, chronic pancreatitis, brain-gut axis, pharmacology, physiology of the gastrointestinal tract, clinical gastroenterological studies and technology development. He serves as editorial board member for several journals, has participated in expert groups for the Danish Health and Medicines Authority, and is co-inventor of patents.
Grants and awards: He has received awards from the Danish Association of Gastroenterology and Danish Association of Rehabilitation Medicine. He’s research has been funded from many different national and international foundations such as Karen Elise Jensen´s Foundation, The Obel Family Foundation, the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation and EU 7th Framework Programme (grant No. # 223630). Currently his research program is mainly supported by a research grant (#10-092786/DSF) offered by the Danish Agency for Science Technology and Innovation, involving researchers from 6 countries.
Clinical and research management: He is a widely recognised expert in gastroenterology and pain, especially in diseases of pancreas and oesophagus. He has participated in more than 10 courses in management arranged by the Danish Medical Association. He holds the chair as Professor at Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology with responsibility for budgets and quality control. He co-founded and is now Director of Mech-Sense, which is a multidisciplinary research centre where he has the leadership of 24 co-workers (among them 10 Ph.D. students and 8 postdocs). He is leader of the Clinical Trial Unit. He has outstanding experience as leader of research activities in-house as well as in multi-centre studies.
Supervisor duties, teaching and GCP: Has previously supervised 31 Ph.D. students and is currently supervisor for 11 Ph.D. students. He teaches medical students and students in health technology as well as postdocs and specialists within medicine, gastroenterology, pain and pharmacology. Is member of the Danish GCP association and participated in several GCP courses arranged by the association and by the Danish Medical Authorities. He has participated as Principal Investigator in more than 50 studies (phase I, II and III) mainly within pain treatment and gastroenterology.
